Impacts and Adaptation to Climate Change in Western Australian Wheat Cropping Systems

نویسنده

چکیده

The environment in which crops will be grown in the future will change. Temperatures and CO2 concentrations [CO2] will increase. Also a decline in winter rainfall of up to 30% in 2070 is predicted for south-west Australia. Effects of climate change on cropping systems were simulated with the Agricultural Production Systems Simulator (APSIM-Nwheat) using transformed historic weather data. Fifty years of yield were simulated for three soil types at different locations on a north – south transect within the wheatbelt of south-west Australia.

Assessing dangerous climate change impacts on Australias wheat industry

Atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations and global and regional climates are already changing as a result of human activities. More change seems likely. Historical climate variations, particularly in rainfall, have had significant impacts on the Australian cropping industries and consequently we would anticipate additional impacts from future climate change. However, the magnitude of th...

Evaluation of the efficiency of APSIM-Wheat model for simulation of phenology and grain yield of bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) in drylands of west and northwest of Iran

Crop simulation models are valuable tools for prediction of crop performance under various weather conditions and allow designing methods to limit the negative impacts of adverse environmental constraints. Agricultural Production Systems sIMulator (APSIM) is a comprehensive model that simulates the performance of a wide range of crops in response to climatic, soil and management factors. In thi...

The potential impact of climate change on the Australian wool industry by 2030

By 2030, climate change is likely to have implications for the Australian wool industry, principally through effects on forage and water resources, land carrying capacity and sustainability, animal health, and competition with other sectors, in particular cropping. The nature and scale of these impacts will vary between the wool growing regions, depending on the manifestation of the climate cha...

Effects of climate change and elevated CO2 on cropping systems: model predictions at two Italian locations

The potential effects of future climate change were investigated, corresponding to a doubling of atmospheric CO2 from 350 to 700 ppm, on agricultural production of four different cropping systems at two Italian locations, Modena and Foggia. Climate change scenarios, derived from two general circulation models (GCMs), were used as weather input to a soil-plant growth simulator, CropSyst. This mo...

Impacts of climate change and climate variability on the competitiveness of wheat and beef cattle production in Emerald, north-east Australia.

Emerald, north-east Queensland, is at the northern margin of the wheat cropping region of Australia. The Emerald region was previously used predominantly for grazing beef cattle; however, cropping has developed in importance over the past 30 years. We use historical climate records (1890-1998) to simulate and compare wheat yields, grass production and live-weight gain (LWG) over time. The cropp...
